Substantial fine for making nuisance calls

The UK’s data protection watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office has issued a fine of £350,000 to a company for making nuisance calls.

The company, called Miss-sold Products UK Ltd, had the penalty imposed after making 75 million automated marketing calls to individuals without their prior consent, which is contrary to the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003. These calls were made over a period of 4 months.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) received 146 complaints from the public about the company. Some people were called on multiple occasions. The complaints were varied and included being unable to opt out of the calls, receiving multiple calls and receiving calls late at night.
