The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has fined a Swansea double-glazing company £150,000 for making nuisance calls.
Superior Style Home Improvements Ltd called people over an 11 month period whose numbers were registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and who had not given their consent to receive them. The ICO has also issued an Enforcement Notice warning them to stop making the calls.
In other news the ICO recently searched a business premises in Chichester as part of an investigation into the making of nuisance calls related to pensions.
This follows a change in the law earlier this year that made cold calls about pensions illegal in certain circumstances.
During the raid the ICO seized computer equipment and documents for analysis. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
Broadly speaking, the new rules allow for live marketing calls in relation to pension schemes to be made only by a trustee or manager of a pension scheme or a person or firm authorised by the FCA; and the person being called must have either specifically consented to being called by that company, or the caller’s relationship with the individual must meet a strict criteria.
